Background & Innovation

- a note from Joseph Khoury

At EA Designs, we’ve witnessed countless variations in the Bench Press, each boasting attachments, dimensions, and extra padding to entice buyers. However, one element has remained stagnant—the flatness of the padded area.

Since 2003, my immersion in the fitness industry and continuous pursuit of knowledge has led me to discover the transformative power of foam rollers. These versatile tools offer a myriad of benefits, including heightened blood flow, improved movements, and expedited recovery. Yet, one advantage stood out among the rest: enhanced range of motion (ROM). By aligning with the spine and resting upon a foam roller, I experienced the liberation to naturally lower and retract my shoulders with minimal hindrance. The true reward? A superior chest stretch.

This revelation sparked my quest to revolutionise the Bench Press. I believe it should accommodate better scapular retraction without compromising stability.

Join us on this transformative journey as we empower individuals to reach new heights of performance and redefine what’s possible in strength training.

At EA Designs, we’re committed to engineering a bench press that transcends limitations, enabling you to unlock your full potential.

Prototypes I & II

After some thought I designed my first prototype with a narrower width to ensure full ROM when performing the exercise; the curve was in the shape of a D to allow for stability.

Public response within the gym: Due to narrow width, stability proved to be cumbersome for some patrons, especially beginners; after 3 months I removed the bench from the gym and looked to create a new design.

The second prototype was designed with the exact same width as the current benches in the market; this proved to be more stable. The D shape was consistent through the design; curved from top to bottom.

Public response within the gym: General feedback when performing the exercise was great, much better retraction and allowing the shoulders to dip a little; thus, also allowing a better stretch in the pec area. It was also much more comfortable when performing overhead press; something that the patrons at this local Victorian gym enjoyed. The only concern was stability and comfort around lower back area due to the curve; this will prove to be an issue with the incline benches.

Prototype III

With the stability in the lower area in mind (Lumbar segment L1 to L5), I designed the third prototype with a flattened part in that area. Manufactured with one foam piece with a consistent design all the way to the seated area.

This design and its usability improved immensely; the patron’s feedback regarding overall stability in an incline or flat position was great. I kept this in the gym for twelve months.

The Result?

Throughout my journey, I have engaged in numerous enlightening conversations with experts in the field, including Chiropractors, Myotherapists, Massage Therapists, esteemed individuals with PhDs in Sports and Exercise Science, and even world-class bodybuilders.

The resounding message they all shared with me was that the design I envisioned had the potential to revolutionise the market.

As I delved deeper into their insights and research, I uncovered a wealth of knowledge. The shortcomings of current flat bench presses became apparent: tight pecs were a common issue, scapula retraction was compromised, and an overall uncomfortable experience prevailed, often unrealised until one tried the ergonomic bench.

The ‘ErgoBench’, however, emerged as a game-changer, offering a multitude of benefits.
